Gen Con LLC Files for Chapter 11 Bankruptcy

On 2/15/2008 Gen Con LLC, the company that runs the Gen Con Gamin Convention announced they had filed for chapter 11 bankruptcy. They filled in U.S. Bankruptcy Court - Western District of Washington. I have a list of all the documents available on PACER as of 03/04/2008 here. I have downloaded a few of the documents and linked to them on that page. I will try to keep up with developments as best as I can.
A Sad Day in Gaming

Yeah it's been a long time again, but better late then never. ;-)

Sad day today, as Gary Gygax, co-creator of Dungeons & Dragons passed away. Additional information can be found at http://blog.wired.com/underwire/2008/03/report-gary-gyg.html and http://www.freeyabb.com/phpbb/viewtopic.php?t=4373&mforum=trolllordgames.

I slept a little better last night. I think the lack of sleep the past 4-5 nights resulted in my body being tired enough to not care what my brain was obsessing about. ;-)

I also ended up playing City of Heroes last night for the first time in about a year and a half. The account is still active because my SO uses it for extra characters. We got a call from a friend we had lost touch with about 4 years ago. He was back in the area and was wondering what was up. We all had City of Heroes accounts, so we all got on Ventrilo and played for an hour or so. Actually had a fun time and it got my mind of the ringing.

Today the ringing has definitely shifted to the left side.

Tinnitus

It's been a long time since I posted to this blog, but now I have a reasons, and it sucks. So now I am motivated to whine and rant.

A little over two weeks ago I had a ringing in my ears that did not go away. After it persisted for 24+ hours I contacted my primary care physician. He suggested try an antihistamine, Claritin, for a few days to see if it was related to sinus problems. Well it didn't and after a week I got referred to an ENT(ear, nose, throat) doctor.

So yesterday I had the appointment with the ENT and I have tinnitus. They did a hearing test and it turns out my hearing is actually very good. So it doesn't seem related to hearing loss, which is one of the most common causes. The other main cause of persistent ringing is audio trauma, basically a very loud noise. I also have none of the other symptoms for things like a tumor or other diseases associated with ringing ears. So this seems to be just one of those things that happens.

What the doc had to say was basically 'you have tinnitus, it sucks and there isn't really anything I can do'. He did say it might go away on it's own, but I don't want to put any hopes in that and get disappointed. He also said he has had it himself for over 35 years and knows what it's like. He also said that the first 9-12 months are the worst and then most people get used to it.

The real kicker is that there is no single treatment effective for most cases. Most people just have to live with it for the rest of their lives. After a bunch of reading there seems to be a ton of antidotal remedies. Stuff ranging from acupuncture, to herbal remedies, to maskers similar to hearing aids, to surgery, to hypnosis, etc., but nothing across the board.

Sitting at work after the appointment I started getting really bummed out about not being able to do anything to 'fix' the problem.

Trying to get to sleep last night was really bad. The ringing is even more pronounced when things are quite and I usually need things very quite in order to fall asleep. To last night was bad and I'm downright depressed this morning.

If anyone actually reads this you can get more information about tinnitus at the following web sites.

Bunnies Everywhere!

So we have a lot of rabbits in our neighborhood. Living between a large park and a forest preserver makes for a significant amount of wildlife at times. Last night was just plain ridiculous however. After turning off the main drag and into our neighborhood we counted 14 rabbits in the about 4 blocks it takes to get to our house, plus one more in the back yard.

15 bunnies sighted in under 3 minutes! The previous record was 11. We've had as many as 6 in our yard at one time!

There are also plenty of chipmunks and squirrels, The the occasional raccoon or deer. And a couple months ago a beaver just down the street!

Heroes, Penguins and a few Pictures

I recently started playing City of Heroes. Having fun checking out the various Archetypes and power combinations. Last night involved a particularly long Atta mission that had a number of funny moments. At the end we all posed for a few 'group photos'.

Also Penguicon is coming up. I haven't been to it before, but hear it is a blast. Hope to attend this year if work schedules and budgets.
